Representatives of the Chatham-Kent Chamber of Commerce are appealing to residents not to be fooled by offers from large conglomerates.

With Amazon’s annual Prime Day sale approaching next week, Chamber of Commerce President BJ Griffith is urging shoppers to support local businesses.

A statement released by the chamber said Amazon steadily gained market share as small businesses across the country struggled to survive the pandemic, inflation, and rising interest rates and labor costs.

“While Prime Day promises exclusive deals, supporting local businesses is a better choice when profits stay local, it increases community wealth, tax revenue and standard of living. Small businesses and locally owned businesses are still the backbone of our economy,” Chamber President B.J. Griffith said in a press release. “These are local people serving local people and generally have a commitment to stay and raise their families. After all, most businesses started as small, local businesses and found success by growing and expanding.”

“Let’s remember that every dollar spent locally strengthens our social fabric,” added Rory Ring, president and CEO of the Chatham-Kent Chamber of Commerce. “Let’s celebrate our local heroes—the coffee shop owner, the bookstore owner, the artisan baker. Together, we can build a more resilient, vibrant Chatham-Kent.”
