Stevens Point stores receive $10,000 grants through Small Business Support Program

American Express and Main Street America awarded $10,000 grants to 500 small business owners across the country, including two stores in downtown Stevens Point.

STEVENS POINT – Two local businesses in downtown Stevens Point were among 500 small business owners awarded $10,000 through a national grant program.

Bound to Happen Books and PROCESS announced Monday that the companies each received $10,000 through the Backing Small Businesses grant program through American Express and Main Street America.

The program’s grant recipients were announced last month and include small businesses in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico. Grant recipients will have the opportunity to apply later this year for an additional $30,000 grant to be awarded to 25 small businesses.

According to a joint release from Bound to Happen Books and PROCESS, both local stores will use the funds to improve community and customer needs. Both stores plan to invest more in the Stevens Point community through increased revenue from business improvements.

Bound to Happen Books, an independent bookstore that focuses on books with perspectives often overlooked in the mainstream, will complete renovations to its shipping and receiving rooms. The grant money will also help the store expand its online presence and reach a wider audience.

PROCESS, a general store specializing in low-waste products including shampoos, conditioners, lotions, cleaners and more, plans to use the grant money to introduce new products from Indigenous producers, which is in line with its mission to create a market space dedicated to Indigenous people.

Both Bound to Happen Books and PROCESS opened in 2021 on Main Street in downtown Stevens Point. When they opened, both stores were located in the same building. Bound to Happen Books still operates at 1008 Main St., while PROCESS now operates at 836 Main St.

What is small business support?

American Express and Main Street America launched the Backing Small Business grant program in 2021, and since then the program has awarded more than $9 million in grants to 1,180 small businesses across the country. The organizations originally created the program to help economically challenged small business owners recover from the pandemic and grow their businesses.

The program is part of American Express’ Backing Small initiative, which provides financial support and resources to small business owners who are struggling economically. Other programs in the initiative include Backing Historic Small Restaurants and Backing International Small Restaurants. Other efforts include the Shop Small movement and Small Business Saturday, a campaign celebrating the initiative’s 15th anniversary.t anniversary this year.
