Virginia schools are required to provide cell phone-free education

Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin has issued an executive order to implement “cell phone-free” education in Virginia public schools.

The aim of the ordinance is to create a healthier and more focused learning environment by reducing exposure to the addictive effects of cell phones and social media and eliminating distractions in the classroom.

  • Recent studies indicate that spending more than three hours a day on social media doubles the risk of mental health problems among teenagers. In addition, there has been a significant increase in suicides among children.
  • The executive order complements the U.S. Surgeon General’s recommendation to place a warning label on social media apps. It is intended to reduce the harmful effects of excessive screen time on children’s physical and mental health.
