BEIJING — The Information Office of the State Council of China on Thursday released a white paper titled “Protecting China’s Marine and Ecological Environment.”

In addition to the introduction and conclusion, the white paper consists of seven parts: “Improving the marine ecological environment for the harmonious coexistence of people and the ocean”, “Coordinating the protection of the marine ecological environment”, “Systematic management of the marine ecological environment”, “Science-based protection and restoration of marine ecosystems”, “Strengthening the supervision and administration of the marine ecological environment”, “Developing China’s green and low-carbon marine development”, and “Carrying out all-round international cooperation in the protection of the marine ecological environment”.

China is a strong advocate and active participant in protecting the marine ecological environment, which is crucial to initiatives aimed at building a beautiful China and a strong maritime nation, the white paper noted.

Over the years, China has given priority to protecting the ecological environment and pursued systematic management. It has coordinated development and protection efforts and promoted high-quality development with high-level protection, striving to build a marine ecological environment of harmonious coexistence between people and the ocean, the document added.

As the white paper shows, thanks to hard work over the years, China’s marine environment has improved overall, and the potential for ecosystem services and functions in some marine areas has significantly increased.

“These achievements are proof of the country’s commitment to protecting the ecological marine environment,” the statement said.

The white paper said China has demonstrated its commitment as a responsible country by actively promoting international cooperation in marine environment protection, earnestly fulfilling its obligations and commitments under international conventions, and contributing Chinese solutions and strength to global marine governance.

“The Chinese government is issuing this white paper to provide the international community with a comprehensive picture of China’s ideas, actions and achievements in marine and ecological protection, to facilitate understanding of China’s environmental protection efforts and to promote international cooperation in this regard.”
