Jack Black confirms role in Minecraft movie

Jack Black has boarded the Minecraft movie.

With director Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite) eager to shoot his film version of the Mojang/Microsoft gaming sensation for Warner Bros., Vertigo and Legendary Pictures, Deadline is now reporting that the School of Rock actor will play Steve.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’s Jason Momoa, Peacemaker’s Danielle Brooks and Wednesday’s Emma Myers are also in the cast.

On Instagram this week, Black referenced his involvement by posting a snapshot of himself flipping through the pages of the 2022 Minecraft Basics for Dummies guide.

“An actor getting ready,” he captioned it.

First released in 2009, the eponymous sandbox game now proudly holds the title of best-selling video game in history, with nearly 140 million monthly players and 300 million copies sold worldwide.

In the film, players can build their own 3D worlds using colorful blocks by mining materials and crafting items, but it’s not yet known what storyline the film will explore.

This Minecraft adaptation is the latest in a series of failed efforts; the previous one being at the hands of Metal Lords director Peter Sollett.

A blog post on the project’s official website in 2019 read: “We’ll tell you the story of a teenage girl and her unlikely band of adventurers. After the malevolent Ender Dragon sets out on a path of destruction, they must save their beautiful blocky overworld.

“It sounds ambitious! Luckily, the very talented director Peter Sollett (Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist) will make sure everyone is in the right place and delivers award-worthy performances. No pressure!”

Will Will Hess propose something similar?

Minecraft is scheduled to be released in theaters on April 4, 2025.
