Beth Mead blocks tweet that ignores England women’s team achievements

Beth Mead has responded to a tweet claiming Gareth Southgate is the “only England manager” to have reached two major international finals.

The England men’s team reached the Euro 2024 final despite criticism, performing poorly against Slovakia and Slovenia and needing a penalty shootout to beat Switzerland before beating the Netherlands in the semi-finals.

Southgate’s men will play in the final in Berlin on Sunday, and one Twitter commentator called the England manager “the only manager to have reached two major international finals”, infuriating one player.

Arsenal and Lionesses player Mead was part of Sarina Wiegman’s squad that ended a 56-year wait for silverware by lifting the European Championship in front of a packed Wembley 2022.

Wiegman also led England to the 2023 World Cup final in Australia, where they lost to Spain, although Mead was absent from that event after suffering a serious ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in 2022.

Mead responded on X, formerly known as Twitter, quoting the tweet and adding, “Hmm, I’m going to have to disagree” with the commenter.

Southgate is yet to match Weigman’s achievements, having already lifted a trophy with England, but will do so if his side can beat an impressive Spain side on Sunday.

Under Southgate, England have come closest to ending their wait for another major international trophy under any men’s team, adding to the 1966 World Cup. It is the first time they have reached the final on foreign soil.

The England women’s team also claimed victory on home soil, while the men reached the final of the rescheduled 2021 tournament, also held at Wembley Stadium.
