The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community’s 36th Annual Islamic Convention is the oldest gathering of Australian Muslims and is set to kick off this Friday, July 12 for its 36th year. The three-day catered event will feature speeches from community leaders, messages of support from prominent MPs, religious and community leaders, and an exhibition highlighting the humanitarian services of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community.

The gathering will be chaired by the national president of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, as well as Australia’s most influential imams, and will be attended by representatives from all states and territories. Western Australian imam Syed Wadood Janud, who recently supported now-independent Senator Fatima Payman in the Palestinian statehood vote, will also be in attendance. Around 4,000 members from all Australian states and territories are expected to attend, while imams and Ahmadiyya Muslim Community leaders from New Zealand, Malaysia and Fiji will also address the gathering. Free food will be provided to all who attend the three-day convention.

A number of members who fled persecution in countries such as Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan will experience this event for the first time in their lives, as the right to practice religion is still a controversial issue in these countries.
Historically, this event is steeped in the Ahmadiyya tradition, with the first annual convention being held in 1891 in a small Indian town called Qadian. The annual convention hosted by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community UK is the global flagship. The Head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, His Holiness Mirza Masroor Ahmad, addresses the audience to advocate for local, regional, national and international peace.
