Napo must retract and apologize for defaming Kwame Nkrumah – Armah-Kofi Buah

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh

Deputy Minority Leader Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah has condemned the vice-presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as Napo, for attempting to belittle the achievements of Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

In his opinion, Napo made a mistake and found it offensive to compare Dr. Nkrumah’s achievements to those of President Akufo-Addo.

Mr Buah, who is also the MP for the Ellembelle constituency where Nkroful, the birthplace of Dr Nkrumah, is located, is demanding an immediate withdrawal of the case and an apology from Napo.

He believes Napo was trying to “maliciously rewrite history.”

The lawmaker made the demand in a post on Page X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday after Napo, during his presentation as vice-presidential candidate, claimed that President Akufo-Addo had surpassed all his predecessors since Ghana’s independence, including Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

Dissatisfied with Napo’s statement, he emphasized Dr. Nkrumah’s unprecedented contribution to the independence and development of Ghana.

He listed several achievements of Dr. Nkrumah, especially in the Ashanti region, which include the establishment of the Komfo Anokye University Hospital, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and the expansion of the Kumasi Central Market.

As Mr Buah noted, these changes have significantly impacted the development of the region’s economy and infrastructure.

At the national level, Mr. Buah highlighted Dr. Nkrumah’s achievements such as the introduction of free and compulsory primary education, the construction of the Korle Bu University Hospital, the establishment of educational and technical institutes across Ghana, and major infrastructure projects such as the Tema Port and Accra International Airport.

He contrasted these achievements with the current economic challenges Ghana faces under the Akufo-Addo government, including unprecedented debt, debt problems and corruption.

“Under the visionary leadership of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana became a beacon of hope and a shining star in Africa, setting an example for other nations to follow. Sadly, Ghana has now become a laughing stock due to the dismal performance of the government led by Akufo Addo-Bawumia,

“As Minister of Energy, NAPO should recognise the importance of Kwame Nkrumah’s Akosombo Dam, a key infrastructure project that to this day generates over 30 per cent of Ghana’s electricity needs,” reads excerpts from his post.

The deputy minority leader stressed that any attempt to belittle Nkrumah’s achievements would be met with fierce resistance.

“The legacy of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah is sacred and any attempt to degrade it will be met with fierce resistance. The people of Ghana will not tolerate any attempt to distort the history of the country and undermine the legacy of its founding fathers.

“The immortal legacy of the African millennium and global icon, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, will forever be protected and we will not allow it to be distorted or undermined,” he said.
