Xbox Game Pass Drives Huge Increase in Xbox Players for Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2

We’ve seen some huge jumps in Xbox player counts after games joined Xbox Game Pass in the past, but this might be the biggest jump yet. According to our data (courtesy of GameInsights), which uses a sample of over 2.4 million Xbox accounts, Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 managed to debut on our list of games, taking 19th place this week after Xbox player count increased by 34,744% this week. That’s an impressive climb up the list considering the GameMill Entertainment fighting game was the 1,628th most played game on Xbox just a week prior.

Xbox Game Pass has long been considered a fantastic tool for increasing the visibility of smaller teams’ games, and Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2’s performance since joining Game Pass last week is proof of that. For comparison, SteamDB suggests that during the same period (July 3rd to July 8th), Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 peaked at between 70 and 90 concurrent players on Steam each day.

Interestingly, this seems to be an anomaly for this game, as the total concurrent player count on Steam spiked to 116 on July 3 when the game hit Xbox Game Pass, before leveling off at its current level. The week before (June 25 to July 2) shows that the highest concurrent player count on Steam peaked at 68, with a range of between 40 and 60 concurrent players per day. Perhaps Steam players and those playing through Xbox Game Pass are taking full advantage of the cross-platform play feature?

Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 is a Smash Bros.-style fighting game featuring a slew of Nickelodeon characters from major franchises, including Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, SpongeBob SquarePants, Jimmy Neutron, and more. Despite many of its characters being pop culture icons, the game seemed to struggle to attract players when it first released — peaking at #676 on our games list a week after its November 11, 2023 release.

While one of its most direct competitors, MultiVersus, was still on hiatus when Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 released, it’s also worth noting that Mortal Kombat 1 launched in September 2023, and Tekken 6 launched in February 2024, so GameMill’s fighting game was sandwiched between the two battling giants. However, it also has a TA community rating of 3.1/5, so perhaps players didn’t quite get the hang of it either.
