Plan to seal eastern borders and expel illegal immigrants, says Iranian parliament speaker

Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, speaker of Iran’s parliament and presidential candidate, said in a television interview that addressing the issue of illegal immigrants, most of whom are Afghans, is part of his campaign agenda.

He said that if he wins the election, he will completely seal the border between Iran and Afghanistan.

In a live television program on Tuesday, Ghalibaf said: “The eastern borders (with Afghanistan) will definitely be sealed with budget allocation in the overall plan.”

Ghalibaf, presenting his electoral program, stressed that “unauthorized foreigners will certainly be expelled.”

Earlier, Iran’s interior minister announced that $3 billion had been allocated for a plan to seal the eastern border (with Afghanistan).

According to Iranian officials, nearly six million Afghan immigrants currently live in Iran, with a significant proportion of them lacking valid residence documents.

Ghalibaf is one of the first high-profile candidates in Iran’s presidential elections to make his campaign focus on Afghan immigrants.

Last week he described Afghan immigrants as a security threat.
