A Rajasthan man suspected of his wife “talking to ghosts on the phone” kills her

A man from Rajasthan’s Barmer district murdered his wife on suspicions that she was talking to ghosts on the phone, police said.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the accused Chunnilal believed that his wife Jiyo Devi (40) had contacted the spirits and was talking to them on the phone.

The murder occurred early Wednesday morning. Chunnilal attacked Jiyo Devi with an ax while she was sleeping. Hearing her mother’s screams, the couple’s 17-year-old daughter Sumitra tried to intervene but was injured as Chunnilal continued his brutal ax attack.

Neighbors, alarmed by the screams, ran to the house and found the seriously injured mother and daughter. They immediately took the victims to a nearby hospital, where upon arrival, doctors pronounced Jiyo Devi dead. Sumitra was treated and discharged after receiving first aid.

According to police, Devi, Chunnilal and their four children had dinner together on Tuesday night and went to bed. Chunnilal woke up around 2:30 a.m. and attacked his wife. At around 3:00 a.m., the police received a report from neighbors.

The police registered a case based on Sumitra’s complaint and arrested Chunnilal on murder charges.

Jiyo Devi’s body has been sent for autopsy. Further investigation is ongoing.
